What’s on the Menu: Sustainable Seafood in Marietta

Sustainable Seafood

Have you ever thought about where the food on your plate comes from? When you are enjoying a five-course meal with fish as the main course, do you wonder about the marine life that went into your meal? Questions like this have prompted moral quandaries for people who dine on fish and other animals: beyond wondering whether it is morally correct to eat other animals, people are now considering the impact that fishing and hunting have on the environment and ecosystem.

In the wake of this wave of thinking, driving restaurants and other food providers in recent years have started making strides toward more sustainable practices. While fish contain beneficial nutrients that humans need to survive, it’s also important to be aware of how the environment is affected when we farm or take fish, mollusks, prawn, and other sea creatures from their natural habitats.

The good news is that Mac’s Chophouse has some of the best sustainable seafood in Marietta. Read on to learn more about sustainable seafood and our efforts to keep our oceans healthy while still being able to enjoy delicious seafood.

What is Sustainable Seafood?

If a restaurant or fishmonger says that their seafood is sustainable, this means that the fish they prepare and sell was gathered from an area with a healthy population of marine life. These areas are also well-managed by experienced professionals who work to make as little an impact as possible on the environment. Any fishery can be assessed for its sustainability practices, regardless of its size, geography, or fishing methods.

Most Sustainable Seafood Options in the U.S.

The United States is a global leader in sustainable seafood. The country’s wild-capture marine fisheries are highly monitored and managed by groups like the National Marine Fisheries Service, also known as NOAA Fisheries. These organizations use science-based plans that have been designed by fishery management councils in the area, and these plans prioritize the health and safety of the marine population and ecosystem.

In the U.S., there are a wide range of seafood options that come from local, sustainable sources. Three of the most common sustainable seafood options are listed below, but your favorite restaurant that serves sustainable seafood in Marietta may have additional options.

  1. Whiteleg Shrimp - This prawn is raised and harvested using an indoor flowthrough raceway. Raceways are a type of tank that contain shallow water that is circulated at a high flow in order to sustain the aquatic life within. While raceways don’t reuse or recycle their water, they are still considered a much safer and sustainable alternative to fishing in the open ocean.
  2. Albacore - More commonly known as tuna, this fish is voted “Best Choice” on the sustainable seafood scale. Albacore harvesting is conducted in the Eastern Central Pacific Ocean and Northeast Pacific Ocean. The fishing method for tuna involves handlines and hand-operated pole-and-lines, which utilizes both natural and artificial bait and eliminates the risk of bycatching endangered species like dolphins.
  3. Eastern Oyster - This mollusk is harvested in Delaware with towed dredges fishing methods. A towed dredge method involves a special kind of net that is dragged along the bottom of the sea, collecting the bottom-dwelling species that reside there. The towed dredges in Delaware are highly monitored in order to conserve the wildlife and avoid bycatch.
